I took this from the chairlift on the way up, it was worth the freezing hand that I was left with.
Great skiing in the morning today. Early birds got the worm today as there was plenty of snow that eventually washed out to ice later in the day. Very cold still, close to zero when we walked out the door, and the wind chill made everyone freeze. We were on last chair though for the second day in a row and had a blast nonetheless.
Four of our group got up early and went out first thing this morning. We ran into beautiful, freshly groomed trails and eventually made our way over to the Bear Mountain portion of Killington and found some powder that the snow machines produced. The snow is a bit slower than natural snow and dealing with all the ice accumulation on our goggles was a bit annoying, but it was much better than sliding on ice. The weather today was also breathtaking as the skies were blue all day, which made for another good picture day. It was an exciting day though because my friend Jeff made the drive up from Middleburry, Vt to have lunch and catch up a bit. Check out Jeff's blog at http://brain-scat.blogspot.com/. I met him my freshman year of college as we both worked for the newspaper together until he eventually transferred to Penn State University Park from Penn State Behrend. We went for a ride to check out some of the damage hurricane Irene left. We passed a house that said "Why Irene?" spray painted on plywood and a few other roads that were still under construction due to the streams next to them overflowing to the point where they washed out the road. Did not find too much though, Vermont road crews did a fantastic job cleaning up the mess mother nature left.
I did not get too many pictures today, but the ones I did get turned out pretty well. Let me know what you think:
Here is my friend J.J. on the top of our first lift.
My roommate in college Tyler Pakos is posing for this one. It may look like he is wearing jeans but those are just very interesting snow pants. Pakos and J.J. are both from Derry, Pa.
These were the inside of the gondolas, they fit eight maximum and are a very nice relief from the cold and wind that go along with the chairlifts that go up. The K-1 gondola rises over 1,600 feet during the way up.
The view down on the way up the K-1 gondola. You get a good look at the boxes we rode up in in this picture.
I snapped this picture in a hurry on the way down and I look very angry. We had just gotten off a lift that pounded us with machine made snow, that could have added to my discomfort here haha.
Here is J.J. and Pakos on the way up the same lift where I took the headline photo for this post.
I thought the first day was clear but wow, this day was even more clear in my opinion. All these shots were taken in the morning as clouds moved in later in the day. The forecast has snow in the picture for tonight so we are all hoping to find more of the mountain open tomorrow. We need a little help from the ski gods before that happens though, still staying optimistic.
